What Is Claude Cowork? Claude Code for the Rest of Your Work
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for non-coding work: you describe an outcome and Claude plans and carries out the steps — organising files, building spreadsheets and decks, researching, filling in web forms. What it is, how it runs, what it costs, and how to use it safely.
Claude Cowork is an agent from Anthropic for work that isn't writing software. Instead of chatting back and forth, you describe the outcome you want — "turn these 40 receipt screenshots into an expense spreadsheet", "research these five competitors and make me a slide deck" — and Claude plans the steps and carries them out.
Anthropic launched it as a research preview in January 2026 and described it as Claude Code for the rest of your work. It grew out of people using Claude Code for non-coding jobs like renaming thousands of files.
Details as of October 2026. Cowork changes quickly; check Anthropic's Cowork help pages for the current state.
What Cowork can do
- Work with your files. Connect a folder and Claude can read, sort, rename and create files inside it — and only inside folders you've connected.
- Produce real documents. Spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint decks, reports and summaries.
- Use the web. Open sites, read pages, click and fill in forms, using a built-in browser or Claude in Chrome.
- Use your other tools through connectors (MCP) — for example Notion, Asana or your Google account — and plugins that bundle skills and connectors together.
- Run on a schedule. Scheduled tasks can repeat on a cadence, such as a Monday morning summary.
- Split up big jobs. It breaks complex work into subtasks, can run several sub-agents in parallel, and shows its plan and progress so you can steer.
Where it runs
Cowork lives inside the Claude apps. Chat and Cowork share one message box: Claude decides whether your request needs a quick answer or a full multi-step task.
It's available in the Claude desktop apps for macOS and Windows, on the web at claude.ai, in the mobile apps and in a Chrome side panel, depending on your plan and your organisation's settings.
Sessions run in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, so a long task keeps going if you close your laptop. Anything that touches your own computer — local files, browser use, computer use — needs the desktop app open and connected.
What it costs
Cowork needs a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. There's no separate price; it draws on the same usage allowance as the rest of your plan.
Multi-step tasks use far more of that allowance than a quick question. If you hit limits, group related work into one task, start fresh conversations for unrelated jobs, and check Settings → Usage.
Using it safely
An agent that can organise your files can, in principle, also delete them. Cowork has guard rails, but your choices matter:
- Pick an approval mode deliberately. Manual asks before each action. Auto has Claude check each action and block unsafe ones. Skip removes approvals and checks — only use it when you fully trust the task.
- Connect the smallest folder that works. Don't hand it your whole home directory to rename some photos.
- Read the plan before money or messages are involved — anything that pays, sends email or posts on your behalf.
- Keep backups. Claude asks before permanently deleting files, but a backup is the real safety net. (Backups for Beginners)
Cowork vs Claude Code vs chat
| Chat | Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Questions, drafts | Multi-step tasks on files, docs, the web | Building and changing software |
| Does the work itself | No | Yes | Yes |
| Typical user | Everyone | Knowledge workers | Developers and builders |
If your task involves a codebase — running tests, editing code, deploying — use Claude Code. If it's documents, spreadsheets, research and admin, Cowork is the better fit. (Claude Code vs Cowork)
The summary
- Cowork is Anthropic's agent for non-coding work: describe an outcome, Claude does the steps.
- It works with connected folders, documents, the web and your connected tools.
- It needs a paid plan and uses your normal usage allowance — heavily, for big tasks.
- Choose approval modes and folder access carefully, and keep backups.
