What Is Agentic AI? A Plain-English Explanation (With Examples)

Agentic AI means AI systems that pursue a goal by taking actions — using tools, checking results and deciding what to do next — instead of only producing text. What makes AI "agentic", how it differs from generative AI and chatbots, real examples, and the risks to watch.

Agentic AI describes AI systems that act, not just answer. You give an agentic system a goal — "fix the failing test", "book the cheapest flight that arrives before noon", "reconcile these invoices" — and it works out the steps, uses tools to carry them out, looks at what happened, and keeps going until it's done or stuck.

Generative AI vs agentic AI

Generative AI Agentic AI
What you give it A prompt A goal
What it does Produces content (text, images, code) Plans and takes actions toward the goal
Uses tools Rarely Constantly: search, files, APIs, browsers, terminals
Checks its own work No Yes — it observes results and adjusts
Example "Write a cover letter" "Apply to these five jobs"

Agentic AI is built on generative AI: the same large language models do the thinking. What changes is the loop around them. (What Is an LLM?)

The loop that makes it agentic

Under the hood, almost every AI agent runs a simple loop:

  1. Think: given the goal and everything so far, what's the next step?
  2. Act: call a tool — run a command, search, read a file, click a button.
  3. Observe: read the result.
  4. Repeat until the goal is met.

The model doesn't run the tools itself. It asks for a tool call, the surrounding software runs it, and the result goes back to the model. (What Is Function Calling?, How Coding Agents Work)

Real examples in 2026

  • Coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and Antigravity read a codebase, edit files, run tests and open pull requests. (What Is an AI Coding Agent?)
  • Desktop agents like Claude Cowork organise files, build spreadsheets and fill in web forms. (What Is Claude Cowork?)
  • Automation agents built in tools like n8n answer support tickets using your order database. (What Is n8n?)
  • Shopping and payment agents that can check out on your behalf are emerging, with payment providers building protocols for them.

AI agents vs agentic AI

People use the terms loosely. A practical distinction: an AI agent is a specific system (this support bot, that coding tool). Agentic AI is the broader approach — systems designed with autonomy, tools and feedback loops. (What Is an AI Agent?)

The risks

Giving software the ability to act brings new failure modes:

The fixes are the same ones you'd use for a new employee: limited permissions, approval for risky actions, an isolated workspace, and a record of what was done.

The summary

  • Agentic AI pursues goals by taking actions with tools, checking results, and repeating.
  • It's generative AI wrapped in a think–act–observe loop.
  • It's powerful, and it needs guard rails: limited access, approvals and isolation.

EasySpawn gives a coding agent its own isolated, persistent server — your app, database and Claude Code together, kept away from your laptop and other customers. See how it works or join the waitlist.
