Claude Code vs Cowork: Which Claude Agent Should You Use?
Claude Code and Claude Cowork are both Anthropic agents that do the work instead of just answering. Claude Code is built for software; Cowork is built for files, documents, spreadsheets and the web. How they differ on what they touch, where they run, safety and usage — and how to pick.
Anthropic now has two agents that take action rather than just reply: Claude Code and Claude Cowork. They share a lot under the hood — Anthropic describes Cowork as bringing Claude Code's agentic abilities to non-coding work — so it's fair to ask which one you need.
The short answer: if the job lives in a codebase, use Claude Code. If it lives in documents, folders, spreadsheets and websites, use Cowork.
Details as of October 2026.

When Claude Code is the right tool
Pick Claude Code when the work needs a developer's tools:
- Building features, fixing bugs, refactoring.
- Running tests and builds and reacting to the results.
- Working with git: branches, commits, pull requests.
- Anything involving a database, a server, or a deploy.
Claude Code's safety model is built around those risks: permission modes, hooks, sandboxing for shell commands, and checkpoints you can rewind.
When Cowork is the right tool
Pick Cowork when the work is about information rather than code:
- "Rename and sort these 2,000 photos by date and place."
- "Read these PDFs and build a comparison spreadsheet."
- "Research these vendors and make a ten-slide summary."
- "Fill in this web form for each row of my spreadsheet." (Watch it closely.)
Cowork's safety model is built for that: approval modes (Manual, Auto, Skip), access limited to connected folders, and a confirmation before permanent file deletion. (What Is Claude Cowork?)
The grey areas
- A non-developer building an app. That's still a codebase. Use Claude Code, even if you never read the code yourself. (Claude Code for Non-Developers)
- Data analysis. A one-off spreadsheet summary is Cowork territory. A repeatable pipeline with scripts and a database is Claude Code territory.
- Writing docs for a codebase. Claude Code, because it can read the code it's documenting.
Usage and cost
Both draw on the same Claude plan allowance, and both can use a lot of it: an agent that works for twenty minutes uses far more than a chat reply. Cowork's Auto approval mode uses extra usage because of its additional safety checks. Claude Code can also run on an API key with per-token billing. (Claude Code Usage Limits)
Can you use both?
Yes, and plenty of people do. The desktop app has both side by side. A common split is Claude Code for the product and Cowork for the business around it — investor updates, support spreadsheets, research.
The summary
- Same family, different jobs: Claude Code for software, Cowork for everything around it.
- Claude Code works in a repository and runs developer tools; Cowork works in folders, documents and the web.
- Both need a paid plan and share its usage allowance.
EasySpawn gives Claude Code a persistent server of its own, with your app, database and HTTPS next to it, so it keeps working when your laptop is closed. See how it works or join the waitlist.
