Claude Code vs OpenCode: Closed Agent or Open-Source Agent?
OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent that works with almost any model provider; Claude Code is Anthropic's agent built around Claude. How they compare on models, cost, features, privacy and workflow — and when each makes sense.
OpenCode has become the best-known open-source alternative to Claude Code. Both are AI coding agents that run in your terminal (and beyond), read your project, edit files and run commands. The big difference is who controls the model.
Details as of October 2026. Check opencode.ai and Claude's pricing for current information.
The short version
- Claude Code is Anthropic's agent. It's built for Claude models and comes with a Claude subscription or API key.
- OpenCode is an open-source agent from the team behind SST. It connects to dozens of model providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, local models — and you pay the provider (or use OpenCode's own model offerings).
What OpenCode is
OpenCode runs as a terminal interface, a desktop app or an IDE extension. It has two main agent modes you switch between: Plan, which proposes an approach without changing anything, and Build, which makes the changes. It supports MCP servers, custom agents and project rules, and it reads AGENTS.md.
Install it with:
curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash
# or
npm install -g opencode-ai
You then connect a provider with an API key, or use OpenCode Zen, a curated set of models the team has tested.
How they compare
| Claude Code | OpenCode | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Closed | Open source |
| Models | Claude models | Many providers, including local models |
| How you pay | Claude plan or Anthropic API | Your chosen provider's API, or OpenCode's model plans |
| Interfaces | Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web, mobile | Terminal, desktop, IDE extension |
| Plan before building | Plan mode | Plan agent |
| Instructions file | CLAUDE.md (also reads AGENTS.md) | AGENTS.md |
| Extensibility | Hooks, skills, subagents, plugins, MCP | Custom agents, MCP, plugins |
| Cloud / remote sessions | Yes (web, mobile, routines) | Self-run |
Where OpenCode wins
- Model choice. Switch between Claude, GPT, Gemini or an open-weight model per task, or run one locally for privacy. (How to run an LLM locally)
- Open source. You can read the code, audit what it sends, and change it.
- No lock-in. Your workflow isn't tied to one company's pricing.
Where Claude Code wins
- Tight integration with Claude. Features like prompt caching, effort levels and auto-compaction are tuned for Claude models. (How Claude Code uses context)
- Breadth of surfaces. The same sessions in the terminal, editors, a desktop app, the browser and your phone. (Web, desktop or terminal)
- Subscription pricing. With Pro or Max you pay a flat monthly fee rather than per token, which is often far cheaper for heavy agent use than raw API prices.
- Safety and automation features — permission modes, hooks, sandboxing, GitHub Actions, scheduled routines.
Cost: the part people get wrong
OpenCode itself is free, but the model isn't. If you plug in a pay-per-token API key, a long agent session can cost more than you'd expect — agents re-read a lot of context. (What are tokens?)
A flat Claude subscription caps your spend. Pay-per-token gives you flexibility. Neither is cheaper in every case; watch your usage for a week before deciding. (How to keep Claude Code costs down)
Which to choose
- You want to mix models or run locally: OpenCode.
- You want open source you can audit or modify: OpenCode.
- You mainly use Claude and want the most polished experience across devices: Claude Code.
- You want predictable monthly cost for heavy use: Claude Code on a subscription.
Both read AGENTS.md, so you can keep one instructions file and try each on the same project. (AGENTS.md vs CLAUDE.md)
EasySpawn gives you a persistent Linux server with Claude Code ready to go — and because it's a real server, you can install any other terminal agent alongside it too. See how it works or join the waitlist.
