Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Should You Use?

Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini compared for writing, coding, research and everyday use: plans and prices, how each fits into the tools you already use, coding agents (Claude Code vs Antigravity), and how to choose.

Claude (from Anthropic) and Gemini (from Google) are two of the three leading AI assistants, alongside ChatGPT. They're both excellent; the right choice depends mostly on what you do all day and which ecosystem you live in.

Plans as of October 2026 — check Claude's pricing and Google's AI plans for current details.

The short version

  • Gemini is woven into Google's products — Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Android, Search — and comes with cheap entry plans and very long context.
  • Claude is a strong writer and careful reasoner, and its coding agent, Claude Code, is one of the most widely used.

Writing and reasoning

Claude has a reputation for natural, well-structured writing and for following detailed instructions closely. Gemini is fast, good with current information from Google Search, and handles very long inputs. Test both on your own work — the differences are easier to feel than describe.

Coding

  • Claude Code works in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app, the browser and your phone. It's included with Claude's paid plans. (What is Claude Code?)
  • Google Antigravity is Google's agent-first IDE and CLI, with a free individual tier. In June 2026 it replaced Gemini CLI for individual users. (Claude Code vs Antigravity, What is Gemini CLI?)

If your budget is zero, Google's free coding tools are the easier start. If you want the most configurable agent across many surfaces, Claude Code is the usual pick.

Everyday use

If you live in Google Workspace, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs is hard to beat for convenience: summarise a thread, draft a reply, analyse a Sheet without copying anything. Claude has connectors for Google Drive, Gmail and others, but Gemini is native.

If you mainly work in a chat window on long tasks, Claude's projects and artifacts are excellent.

Images and media

Gemini generates and edits images and video. Claude doesn't generate images.

How to decide

  1. Google Workspace all day? Gemini.
  2. Building software? Try Claude Pro with Claude Code and Antigravity on a real project.
  3. Lots of writing or long documents? Try Claude.
  4. Tight budget? Gemini's cheaper plans, or both free tiers.

There's no lock-in on the chat side — many people use one for work, another for code.

Using them in your own app

Both have developer APIs billed per token. Claude's API is covered in Claude API pricing explained. If you want to switch between them easily, a router like OpenRouter gives one API for many models.

EasySpawn gives you a persistent server with Claude Code built in — and since it's a real Linux server, any other CLI agent can run there too. See how it works or join the waitlist.
