ChatGPT vs Claude: Which AI Assistant Should You Use?
ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) are the two leading AI assistants. How they compare for writing, coding, research, images and voice, what each plan costs, and a practical way to decide — including why many people pay for both.
ChatGPT and Claude are the two AI assistants most people choose between. Both can write, explain, summarise, analyse files and write code. They have different strengths, and the gap between them changes with every model release — so treat any ranking as a snapshot.
Prices as of October 2026, from ChatGPT's pricing and Claude's pricing.
The short version
- ChatGPT is the broadest all-rounder: chat, image generation, voice, video, a huge ecosystem of add-ons, and the cheapest paid tier.
- Claude is especially strong at writing that sounds natural, working carefully with long documents, and coding — particularly through Claude Code.

Writing
Both write well. Many people find Claude's default writing more natural and less formulaic, and better at matching a requested tone. ChatGPT is quicker to produce punchy marketing copy. Try the same prompt in both on something you actually need to write — the difference is easy to feel.
Coding
This is where the choice matters most for people building apps.
- Claude comes with Claude Code on paid plans — an agent that works through your project in the terminal, editor, desktop app or browser. (What is Claude Code?)
- ChatGPT comes with Codex, OpenAI's equivalent agent, available from the free plan (app only) upward. (What is OpenAI Codex?)
Both are strong. See Claude Code vs Codex for the detail.
Research and files
Both can browse the web, read PDFs and spreadsheets, and run deep research reports. Claude is known for handling very long documents carefully; ChatGPT has more add-ons and integrations.
Images, voice and video
ChatGPT is ahead here: it generates and edits images, and has advanced voice and video features. Claude doesn't generate images (though it can build diagrams, charts and small apps as artifacts).
Privacy and data
Both let you control whether your conversations are used for training, and both offer business plans with stronger guarantees. Check each company's settings and policies if you'll paste in customer or company data.
How to decide
- Mostly coding or building apps? Try Claude Pro with Claude Code, and ChatGPT Plus with Codex, each for a week on your real project.
- Need images or voice a lot? ChatGPT.
- Lots of long documents, careful writing? Claude.
- Tight budget? ChatGPT Go at $8/month, or the free tiers of both.
- Not sure? Use the free plans side by side on the same tasks.
Many people end up paying for both and using each for what it does best.
Building with them
If you're adding AI to your own app, you'll use their APIs instead of the chat apps — billed per token. (OpenAI API vs Claude API, How to build an AI app)
EasySpawn gives you a persistent server with Claude Code built in, for when you move from chatting about an app to actually building and running one. See how it works or join the waitlist.

Both APIs let your app send text (and images) to a model and get an answer back. How they differ in request shape, models, tool calling, structured output, caching and pricing — and why many apps keep the choice swappable instead of picking forever.
