How to Make a Website With AI (Step by Step, No Coding Required)

A practical guide to building a website with AI in 2026: choosing the right kind of tool for your site (AI site builder, AI app builder, or a coding agent), writing a good first prompt, iterating on design and content, connecting a domain, and the launch checklist most AI-built sites skip.

You can now describe a website in plain English and have AI build it — layout, copy, images, even a contact form. The trick is picking the right kind of tool for the site you need, then guiding it well.

Step 1: Decide what kind of site it is

You need Best kind of tool Examples
A simple site: portfolio, restaurant, landing page AI website builder with visual editing Website builders with AI generation (Framer, Wix, Squarespace and others)
A site with logins, a database, payments — really an app AI app builder Lovable, Bolt.new, v0
Full control, custom features, your own hosting AI coding agent Claude Code

If you'll mostly change text and photos, a website builder is easiest. If users will sign up or pay, you're building an app. (Static vs Dynamic Websites, Choose an AI App Builder)

Step 2: Write a good first prompt

Vague prompts get generic sites. Include:

  • What it is and who it's for: "A website for a dog-walking business in Leeds, for busy professionals."
  • The pages: home, services and prices, about, contact.
  • What visitors should do: "Book a free meet-and-greet."
  • The feel: "Warm and friendly, lots of photos, green and cream colours."
  • Must-haves: a contact form, a map, reviews section, mobile-friendly.

Step 3: Iterate in small steps

Change one thing at a time: "Make the hero headline shorter", "Add prices to the services cards", "The menu overlaps the logo on mobile". Big multi-part requests are where AI tools start breaking things. If you get stuck in a loop of fixes that don't work, roll back and describe the problem differently. (Stuck in an AI Fix Loop?)

Check it on your phone as you go — most visitors will see it there. (Responsive Design Basics)

Step 4: Replace the placeholder content

AI fills gaps with plausible-sounding text and stock images. Before launch, replace:

  • Made-up testimonials, statistics and awards (publishing fake reviews can get you into legal trouble).
  • Placeholder phone numbers, addresses and emails.
  • Generic "Lorem ipsum" style copy with your own words.

Step 5: Get a domain and publish

  1. Buy a domain. (Best Domain Registrar)
  2. Publish from your tool, or deploy the code to a host.
  3. Connect the domain with the DNS records your host gives you. (Connect a Custom Domain to Your App)
  4. Make sure it loads over HTTPS. (What Is an SSL Certificate?)

Step 6: The launch checklist

The summary

  • Pick the tool by the site: builder for simple sites, app builder for apps, coding agent for full control.
  • A detailed first prompt and small iterations beat one giant request.
  • Replace placeholder content, connect a domain, and run the launch checklist.
