Is Claude Code Free? What You Actually Need to Use It
The Claude Code software is free to install, but using it needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or an API account billed per token. What each option costs, what the cheapest realistic setup is, and what the "free Claude Code" guides online are really doing.
Short answer: the Claude Code program is free to download, but using it is not. Claude Code sends your requests to Claude models, and those cost money — either through a Claude subscription or through pay-as-you-go API billing.
Prices as of October 2026; check claude.com/pricing for current figures.
The ways to pay
| Option | How you pay | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | Monthly subscription (about $20) | Trying it properly, light daily use |
| Claude Max (5x or 20x) | Higher monthly subscription | Heavy daily use |
| Team / Enterprise | Per seat, through your company | Teams |
| API key (Claude Console) | Pay per token, no subscription | Occasional use, automation, apps |
The free Claude.ai plan doesn't include Claude Code. Anthropic's install guides list Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or a Console account as the requirements.
Subscription or API key?
- Subscription gives you a predictable monthly bill and usage limits that reset on a schedule. When you hit a limit, you wait (or buy extra usage). (Claude Code Usage Limits)
- API key has no monthly fee but you pay for every token. A light week can cost a few dollars; a heavy agentic week can cost more than Max. (Claude Pro vs Max vs API)
Most individuals start with Pro, see how fast they hit limits, and move up only if they need to.
The cheapest realistic setup
- Claude Pro for the subscription.
- Use Sonnet or Haiku for routine work and save Opus for hard problems. (How to Change the Model)

What about "Claude Code for free" guides?
You'll find tutorials promising free Claude Code. They usually do one of two things:
- Point Claude Code at a different model. Tools like Ollama offer an Anthropic-compatible API, so you can run Claude Code against a local open-weight model. It works, but you're no longer using Claude — the quality depends on the model you run, and Anthropic doesn't support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models. (Claude Code With Local Models)
- Use free trial credits. New API accounts sometimes get a small amount of free credit to test with. It runs out quickly with an agent.
Be wary of anything offering "free Claude API keys" — those are usually stolen or scams.
Free alternatives
If you genuinely can't pay yet, some agent tools have free tiers with weekly limits, and open-source agents can run with cheap or local models. (Best AI Coding Tools) None of them is Claude Code, but they'll teach you the workflow.
The summary
- Installing Claude Code is free; using it needs a paid plan or API credit.
- Pro is the usual starting point; API keys suit occasional or automated use.
- "Free Claude Code" usually means a different model behind it.
