How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in 2026?

The real cost of building an app depends far more on how you build it than on the idea. Realistic ranges for building with AI yourself, freelancers, agencies and in-house teams, the running costs most estimates leave out, and how to keep the first version cheap.

"How much does an app cost?" has the same answer as "how much does a house cost?" — it depends what you're building and who builds it. But the ranges have shifted a lot now that AI tools can write much of the code.

Figures below are rough ranges to orient you, not quotes. Rates vary hugely by country and experience.

The two kinds of cost

  1. Building it — design, development, testing.
  2. Running it — hosting, database, email, tools, AI usage, maintenance. Monthly, forever.

Most estimates only cover the first. The second decides whether the app is sustainable. (How much does it cost to run an app?)

Building it: four routes

1. Build it yourself with AI

Tools: Lovable, Replit, Bolt, v0, Cursor, Claude Code. (How to choose an AI app builder)

  • Money: often tens to a few hundred dollars a month in subscriptions and usage while building.
  • Time: your evenings and weekends — days for a simple tool, weeks to months for a real product.
  • Hidden cost: the security, deployment and operations work AI builders don't do for you. (You built an app with AI. Now what?)

Best for validating an idea before spending real money. (What is an MVP?)

2. A freelancer

  • Small, well-defined app: low thousands.
  • A full MVP with accounts, payments and an admin area: typically several thousand to tens of thousands.

Clear scope is everything — vague requirements are what make freelance projects overrun. (How to write a PRD)

3. An agency

Design, development, project management and testing in one package. Commonly tens of thousands for an MVP, more for complex products. Faster and more polished; more expensive; check what you get at handover (code, accounts, documentation). (Hand off an AI-built app to a client)

4. An in-house team

Salaries make this the most expensive per month — but it's the route for an ongoing product company once you have funding or revenue.

What drives the cost up

  • Number of features — every feature also means design, testing and maintenance.
  • User roles and permissions — admins, teams, organisations. (Role-based access control)
  • Payments and subscriptions (Stripe subscriptions explained)
  • Native mobile apps in addition to web — roughly another app to build and maintain. (Web app vs mobile app)
  • Integrations with other systems.
  • Real-time features — chat, live collaboration. (WebSockets explained)
  • Compliance — health, finance, children's data.
  • Custom design vs a component library.

Running costs (monthly)

Item Small app, rough range
Hosting + database Free tiers to tens of dollars; more as you grow
Domain ~$1–2/month equivalent
Email sending Free tiers, then usage-based (Resend vs SendGrid vs Postmark)
AI model usage Pennies to a lot — depends entirely on usage (Claude API pricing)
Error monitoring, analytics Often free at first
App store fees (mobile) $99/year Apple, $25 once Google (Publish an app)
Maintenance Dependency updates, bug fixes — time or money every month

A rule of thumb from traditional development: yearly maintenance often costs a meaningful fraction of the original build. AI lowers that, but doesn't remove it.

How to keep the first version cheap

  1. Validate before you build — talk to potential users, run a landing page. (How to validate your app idea)
  2. Build the smallest useful version — one core workflow done well.
  3. Web first — skip native apps until you know people want it.
  4. Use services for solved problems — auth, payments, email.
  5. Build it yourself with AI, then pay an expert for a review of security and architecture before launch — far cheaper than a full build.
  6. Pick predictable hosting so a busy month doesn't surprise you.

EasySpawn keeps the running side predictable: a flat monthly price per server for your app, database, background jobs, HTTPS and daily backups — with Claude Code built in to help you build. See pricing or join the waitlist.
